Saturday, Late Morning, Springtime
The way people get about the weather here! There is so much giddiness. On the way home from town I stop to try on a pair of ball dresses. Why? I have never had occasion to wear a ball dress in the past; but there they are, swinging on a breeze, £10 each. I try a gold one on first. It looks good. I have never worn a long gown like this before. It fits me perfectly except around the bust where it is too tight and will not zip all the way. The women in the shop don’t know quite what to say. I could have it altered, they suggest, except that will be expensive. It’s such a shame because other than that it looks so good. The other dress is far too big. I look like a mermaid swimming in a turquoise ocean and I feel like Goldilocks. So I don’t buy a ball gown after all.

Did you not have a prom?
You should just purchase one for the heck of it, and don it out on the town.
But you tried them on! That counts!
@Meagan I wore a very understated cocktail dress to my prom. Practical (and I still wear the thing!), but it does mean I missed out on the sweeping-floor-length-gown experience…I like the idea of wearing one just for the hell of it, though!
@AH I agree! Especially since trying on dresses in front of the sales ladies at the Ballroom is more than a little daunting. There’s something quite alarming about having a gaggle of women standing around you saying, “ooh, I don’t think that will quite zip up!” while a girl strips naked across the room and another one hoists her breasts up to simulate the effects of an imaginary bra and says, “oh, but I won’t be this pale, I’m going to the tanning salon later.”
